Plato was a pagan, but that doesn’t mean that every word he wrote was untrue. In fact, many of his works are filled with insightful observations about nature, man, and morality. If we approach his writings with discernment, there is even the possibility that we may walk away edified.
The same could be said about the music of Sigur Rós (though their impact on Western civilization will undoubtedly be a bit smaller). A few months ago I bought their penultimate release, Takk…, and, though I had enjoyed some of their previous work, I discovered a depth and beauty on this album that pulled me out of myself. If you’re wondering about the odd names, the band is from Iceland. Their name means ‘Victory Rose’. ‘Takk’ means ‘thanks’ and is an appropriate title for this album, since one of the primary attitudes it evokes is gratitude. Perhaps it could be considered the post-modern poets’ thanksgiving offering to an unknown God (Acts 17:23).
Takk… provokes wonder, too. Its hearers soar above majestic landscapes of snow capped mountains and river carved valleys. Elves are spotted dashing through ancient groves of evergreens. The air is crisp and charged with magic. But solemnity and darkness are not absent. This fairy-tale land is fallen. Danger lurks in the shadows. However, there is hope. No matter the blackness of the night, dawn is coming, and all creation trembles with anticipation.
Though their CDs might be catalogued as Rock/Pop at some stores, Sigur Rós can hardly be called a rock band. Actually, I’ve been told they are classified as post-rock. This means that they use rock band instrumentation (guitars, keyboards, bass and drums) but stay away from driving guitar riffs and traditional song structures. Basically, you will never hear their music at the gym. It is too reflective and develops too slowly—though occasionally reaching moments of intense jubilation and high energy—requiring patient ears that are not merely looking for a quick fix of adrenaline. Takk… requires an investment in order to appreciate it. But it is an investment that pays high dividends.
